Connecting a flexible hose to rigid pipework

A barbed fitting has a ribbed shank over which a flexible hose is slipped and held by a hose clamp. The other end is threaded (male or female) or has a swivel nut. It is found on water circuits, pumps and liquid transfer installations.

Brass or stainless, swivel nut or threaded

  • Brass for everyday uses, 316 stainless for harsher environments; check fluid compatibility.
  • Swivel nut: makes assembly easier without turning the hose.
  • Shank diameter to match the inside diameter of the hose.

How do I secure the hose on a barbed fitting?

Push the hose fully onto the shank and tighten a suitable clamp. If needed, warm the hose slightly to ease fitting, depending on its material.

Does a barbed fitting withstand pressure?
