Which product for a threaded fitting?

PTFE tape, resin or sealing paste is applied to the male thread. The choice depends on the fitting material and the fluid carried; the product page states the intended use.

Can I use the same product for drinking water and hydrocarbons?

Not necessarily. Some products are meant for drinking water, others for hydrocarbons. Use the one intended for your fluid and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

How do I get a lasting seal?

Clean and degrease the threads, apply a reasonable amount of product, tighten without excess and respect the drying or curing time given before putting the line under pressure.
