A sand filter to clarify water

A sand filter retains the suspended particles (sand, silt, fine matter) in the water of a borehole, a well, a rainwater system or a pond. It protects pumps, appliances and pipes.

How does a sand filter work?

The water passes through a bed of sand or filter medium that retains the impurities. When the filter clogs, it is cleaned by backwashing (water sent in the opposite direction).

How often should the filter be cleaned?

Backwash when the pressure or flow drops, or regularly according to the instructions. The more loaded the water, the more often it needs cleaning.

Does a sand filter make water drinkable?

No: it retains particles, but does not treat bacteria or dissolved substances. For drinking water, combine it with a suitable treatment after a water analysis.
