Domestic pump

The cellar pump is a submersible pump for clean or slightly loaded water. It drains flooded basements, cellars, sumps and swimming pools, and most models start and stop by themselves with a float switch. Compact, most models plug into a 230 V outlet. Not sure which model? A cellar pump to remove water from a basement, garage or flooded room

A cellar pump is a submersible pump placed on the floor that removes water from a cellar, garage or crawl space. Some models, called floor-suction pumps, draw down to a few millimetres from the surface, leaving only a film of water; others, in stainless steel or Vortex type, accept more heavily loaded water.

Selection criteria

  • Residual water level: floor-suction model to dry out almost completely.
  • Clear or loaded water: particle passage is stated on the product page.
  • Flow and discharge head, according to the drainage level.
  • Control: automatic with a built-in or external float, or manual.

Built-in float or external float?

The float starts the pump when the water rises and stops it when the water drops. A built-in float is part of the pump: it is simple to set up. An external float is separate or mounted beside the pump, and some kits let you set the switch-on level. The exact type is stated on each product page.

For a step-by-step choice, see our guide Choosing a cellar pump.

Frequently asked questions: Cellar drainage pumps

Which pump should I choose to dry the floor almost completely?

A floor-suction type model is designed to pump at low water levels. Check the model's minimum residual water level on the product page.

Is a float useful on a cellar pump?

Yes if the pump must run unattended: the float starts and stops the pump according to the water level. It must be able to move freely.

What precautions should I take when installing a cellar pump?

Place it on a stable surface, connect the discharge hose to an authorised drain, and power it from a compliant electrical installation. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.

What is the difference between a built-in float and an external float?

A built-in float is part of the pump; an external float is separate or mounted beside it and its type (vertical, cable) varies by model. The exact type is stated on the product page.

Which hose should I use with a cellar pump?

Choose a discharge hose with a diameter at least equal to the pump outlet, stated on the product page. The longer, narrower or more twisted it is, the lower the flow. See choosing a hose or pipe.

What power or current should I allow for?

The current drawn is on each model’s page. Check that the supply line can carry it, with residual-current protection, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. A worked example is in the guide Choosing a cellar pump.
