A 12 V or 24 V pump runs from a battery: no mains socket needed, which makes it ideal for vehicles, boats, remote worksites and solar installations. You still need to choose the right voltage, the right wiring and a running time that suits the pump.

What are 12 V and 24 V pumps used for?

These pumps are found wherever a battery is available but not the mains. The liquid to be transferred determines the type of pump:

Voltage, current, cable and fuse

The pump voltage must match the battery voltage: a 12 V pump on a 24 V battery is likely to be destroyed, and a 24 V pump on 12 V will run poorly or not at all. Light vehicles, pleasure boats and motorhomes are generally 12 V; many heavy trucks and machines are 24 V.

For the same power, a 24 V pump draws about half the current of a 12 V pump. The wiring heats less and the voltage drop is smaller, which matters over long distances.

Current, cable and fuse. Current is calculated with the formula I = P ÷ U (amps = watts ÷ volts). It determines the cable cross-section and the fuse rating.

Worked example

A 100 W pump draws about 8.3 A at 12 V (100 ÷ 12), but only about 4.2 A at 24 V (100 ÷ 24). At start-up the current is higher: the product page states the current to allow for.

  • Cable: its cross-section must suit the current and the length of the circuit. A cable that is too thin heats up and causes a voltage drop, so the pump lacks power. See cables and electrical accessories.
  • Fuse: fit it on the positive wire, as close as possible to the battery, with a rating suited to the pump current (follow the instructions).
  • Switch: provide a switch or relay to cut the pump off, and check polarity (+ and −) before powering up.
  • Connections: tight, clean and protected from moisture.

Duty cycle, liquid and battery

Duty cycle. Many 12 V / 24 V pumps are designed for intermittent duty: they withstand limited running periods followed by a rest time. Continuous running beyond what the manufacturer allows overheats the motor and shortens its life. Respect the running time given on the product page.

  • Do not run the pump dry: it heats up quickly and the seal can be damaged.
  • Prime or immerse the pump depending on its type, as described in the instructions.
  • For continuous or long-duration use, choose a model designed for continuous duty.

The liquid: a clean-water pump is not suitable for fuel, oil or chemicals. Check the compatibility of the materials (seals, body, impeller) on the product page. For fuel, see the guide Pumping fuel safely.

The battery: its capacity is expressed in ampere-hours (Ah). A pump drawing 10 A for 30 minutes uses about 5 Ah. In general it is best not to fully discharge a lead-acid battery; if the pump often runs with the engine off, allow for a battery of sufficient capacity, or a backup power source.

The selection method in 5 steps

  1. Define the use: liquid, volume to transfer and height to cover.
  2. Note the battery voltage: 12 V or 24 V.
  3. Choose the flow rate and pressure on the product page, with a little margin.
  4. Calculate the current (I = P ÷ U) to size the cable and the fuse.
  5. Check the duty cycle and the battery capacity.

The mistake to avoid

Wiring the pump with a cable that is too thin or too long, and no fuse. The pump lacks power, the cable heats up and, in the event of a short circuit, nothing protects the circuit.

Frequently asked questions

Can a 12 V pump be connected to a charger or power supply?

Yes, provided the supply is 12 V and delivers enough current, including when the pump starts. Check the maximum current on the product page.

Can a 24 V pump run on 12 V?

In practice no: flow and pressure drop sharply, and the motor may overheat or fail to start. Always choose the voltage of your battery.

How do you power a pump with no mains electricity?

With a battery charged by the vehicle, a solar panel or a generator. Solar pumps are designed for this case.
