Pumps for wells and surface water

A well pump supplies a house, a garden or a farm from a well, a cistern or a water reserve. Depending on the depth, you choose a surface pump or a submersible pump.

Selection criteria

  • Depth of the water: beyond a few metres, a submersible pump is needed.
  • Well diameter.
  • Well yield and the demand to meet.

Well pump or borehole pump?

The pumps on this page are meant for wells, cisterns and water reserves. For a cased borehole of 3, 4 or 6 inches, see all submersible pumps. Beyond about 6 to 8 m between the water level and the pump, a surface pump can no longer draw water: you need a submersible pump. Guide: Choosing a submersible pump.

Frequently asked questions: Well pumps

Surface or submersible pump for a well?

A surface pump draws the water and is limited to a few metres. For a deeper well, a submersible pump pushes the water up from the bottom.

Is my well water drinkable?

Not necessarily: a pump does not ensure water quality. Have the water analysed before any use for drinking, and declare the well at the town hall.

Should the pump be protected against lack of water?

Yes, a well can run dry in summer. A level probe or controller stops the pump from running dry.
