This indicative table helps you estimate the flow rate and useful pressure of a submersible borehole pump, according to the number of occupants to be supplied and the area to be watered.
Indicative flow rate / pressure table
| Number of occupants | 1 to 6 | 6 to 10 | 10 to 20 | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pump flow rate (m³/h) | 2 | 3 | 4 | 6 | 6 |
| Useful pressure (bar) | 3.2 | 3.5 | 4.0 | 4.5 | 5.0 |
| Area to be watered (m²) | 0 to 400 | 400 to 800 | 500 to 1000 | 0 to 400 | |
Indicative values: they serve as a starting point. They must be confirmed by calculating the total dynamic head (TDH) and by reading the pump curve.
How to read this table
- Find the number of occupants to be supplied with running water (1 to 6, 6 to 10 or 10 to 20).
- Take watering into account: the area of lawn or garden to be watered changes the flow rate and pressure to be provided for.
- Read off the flow rate (in m³/h) and the useful pressure (in bar) from the corresponding column.
- Calculate the TDH of your installation to choose the pump whose curve passes through the required flow rate / head point.
Example of how to read the table
For a home of 4 people with an 800 m² garden, the table gives 3 m³/h and 3.5 bar (“1 to 6 occupants” column, watering of 400 to 800 m²). The full calculation for this example is detailed on the page Calculating the TDH.
Unit benchmarks
- Flow rate: 1 m³/h is equivalent to approximately 16.7 litres per minute.
- Pressure: 1 bar is equivalent to approximately 10 metres of water column (mWC), the value used in our calculations.
