A capacitor to start or run a single-phase motor

In a single-phase pump motor, the capacitor creates the phase shift needed for starting and running. A run capacitor stays connected in service, whereas a start capacitor only acts at start-up. When it fails, the motor often hums without turning.

How to choose a replacement

  • Capacitance in µF and working voltage: take them from the original capacitor or the motor plate.
  • Connection: pins or wires, box or enclosure.
  • Type: run or start, depending on the motor diagram.

How do I know the capacitor is faulty?

The motor hums without starting or overheats. A check by an electrician confirms the diagnosis. Always switch off the power before any work.

Can I change the capacitance from the original?

No: use a capacitance and voltage identical to those of the motor. A different value can overheat the motor or prevent starting.

Must the capacitor be discharged before handling?

Yes, a capacitor can keep a charge after power-off. Have it discharged by a professional and follow the manufacturer's safety instructions.
