Protecting the pump motor against overloads

A pump motor can be damaged by an overload, a stall, a missing phase or a voltage spike. The motor circuit breaker, thermal relay, power contactor and surge protector protect the motor and make starting and stopping easier.

Finding your way

  • Motor circuit breaker: adjustable thermal and magnetic protection.
  • Contactor: power switching, with a coil suited to the control voltage.
  • Thermal relay: monitors the current and cuts out on overload.

How do I set the thermal protection?

Set it to the rated current on the motor plate, not to the power. The equipment manual explains how to proceed.

What is the difference between a motor breaker and a contactor?

The motor circuit breaker protects the motor, the contactor switches it on. The two are often combined in the same enclosure.

Are these products suited to single-phase and three-phase?

Some models are for single-phase, others for three-phase, with specific current ranges. Check this on the product page before ordering.
