Which surface pump for which use?

  • Multistage pump: high pressure, pressure boosting, supply of a house or a watering system.
  • Centrifugal pump: high flow at moderate pressure, water transfer, watering.
  • Transfer pump, flexible-impeller pump or drum pump: transferring liquids.
  • Jet pump: shallow well, suction.

What to check before choosing

Check the suction height (distance between the water and the pump), the flow rate, the pressure and the type of liquid (clear water, loaded water, food product, fuel). A surface pump is installed out of the water, in a dry place protected from frost.

Frequently asked questions: Surface pumps

Surface pump or submersible pump?

A surface pump draws the water, so it is limited to a few metres of suction height. For a deeper well or borehole, a submersible pump pushes the water up from the bottom.

What is the difference between a multistage and a centrifugal pump?

A multistage pump stacks several impellers to reach a higher pressure. A single-impeller centrifugal pump gives a good flow at a more moderate pressure.

What is priming?

Priming means filling the pump body and the suction hose with water before starting: without water, the pump runs dry and is damaged. Some models are self-priming. A foot valve stops the hose from emptying when the pump stops.

Can a surface pump handle liquids other than water?

Yes, some models transfer diesel, oil, food or chemical products. Check the material compatibility (body, seals) with your liquid on the product page.
