Description

Submersible well pump with variable speed: steady pressure

The KMXS kit combines a multistage stainless steel submersible pump with a variable speed drive controlled by a pressure sensor. When you open a tap, the drive adjusts the pump speed to the flow requested and holds the set pressure, instead of starting and stopping the pump at full speed. The kit includes the pump, the control unit, the sensor, the tank and the stainless steel valves: you only have to connect the water inlet, the outlet to the house and the power supply.

Submersible well pump or surface pump?

A surface pump sucks the water up: its practical suction height is limited to about 7 m. A submersible well pump sits in the water and pushes it: it needs no priming, makes no noise at the surface and suits deep water levels. This kit fits a wide well, a storage tank or a reservoir (5-inch pump, see the limits of use below); for a narrow borehole, read our guide to submersible borehole pumps.

Which model: KMXS 305, 307, 505 or 507?

Start with the flow you need: 0 to 4 m3/h for the KMXS 305 and 307, 0 to 7 m3/h for the KMXS 505 and 507. Then check the total dynamic head (TDH): 53 to 100 m depending on the model. TDH adds the depth of the water in the well, the discharge height up to the highest point, the pipe friction losses and the pressure you want at the tap (1 bar ≈ 10 m). Our guide on calculating the total dynamic head explains the method.

What is this kit used for?

  • Water supply from a well, a pond, a basin or a tank (the pump can lie horizontally in a tank or a storage tank).
  • Domestic use, civil and industrial applications.
  • Booster for a house of 3 to 8 people, with watering of 500 m².
  • Rainwater pumping.

Operating limits and installation

  • Clean water, maximum temperature 35 °C: the cylindrical suction strainer stops solid particles.
  • Minimum inside diameter of the well: 132 mm. A 4-inch borehole (about 102 mm) is too narrow: see our 4-inch borehole pumps and 6-inch borehole pumps.
  • Minimum immersion depth: 100 mm. Maximum depth: 20 m, with a cable of sufficient length.
  • Vertical or horizontal installation, including resting on the bottom of a basin or a tank.

Construction and motor

  • Single-block multistage submersible pump in chrome-nickel stainless steel; hydraulic part at the bottom, motor at the top, both cooled by the pumped water (it can run even if only partly submerged).
  • Double shaft seal with an oil chamber in between.
  • Two-pole induction motor, 50 Hz, H07RN8-F 4 G 1 mm² cable, insulation class F, IP 68 protection for continuous immersion, dry winding with double impregnation resistant to humidity.
  • Built to EN 60335-2-41.

What is in the KMXS kit

  • 1 stainless steel 304 submersible pump, DN 132 (vertical or horizontal installation) with its 20 m power cable
  • 1 control and variable speed unit, with stainless steel wall bracket, cradle and manifold
  • 1 pressure sensor already connected to the drive (fitted on the pipework)
  • 1 tank of 24 l and 1 pressure gauge
  • 1 stainless steel isolation valve, 1 set of stainless steel fittings and 1 stainless steel non-return valve
  • 1 stainless steel 1" 1/4 non-return valve with 1" 1/4 stainless steel nipple
  • Polypropylene pressure fittings D32 or D40
  • 1 set of cables (mains supply with 2P+E plug, drive to pump link)

KMXS kit: frequently asked questions

What is the difference with a standard well pump with a pressure switch?

With a pressure switch, the pump starts and stops at full speed between two pressure thresholds. Here the drive sets the speed according to the flow requested and the pressure stays steady. The kit adds a drive, a pressure sensor and a small 24 l tank.

Does this kit fit in a 4-inch borehole?

No: the minimum inside diameter of the well is 132 mm, while a 4-inch borehole is about 102 mm. For a narrow borehole, choose a 4-inch borehole pump.

Can it be installed horizontally in a tank?

Yes: the pump works vertically or horizontally and can rest on the bottom with a minimum water level of 100 mm.

Can it pump dirty water or sewage?

No, this kit is designed for clean water. For dirty water or sewage, see our lift pumps.

What power supply is needed?

All four models run on single-phase 230 V / 50 Hz; the current ranges from 3.3 to 6.8 A depending on the model (see the table).

Which submersible pump should I choose for a well?

Note three values: the inside diameter of the well (this kit needs room for a 5-inch pump), the flow you need (0 to 4 or 0 to 7 m3/h) and the total dynamic head to overcome (53 to 100 m depending on the model). Our guide to calculating the total dynamic head explains the method.

Does well water need treatment?

A pump does not make water drinkable. To filter sand or treat well water, see the guide treating borehole or well water.
